German Language News
"Spitzenzeitungen" with an
international influence:
"Seriöse Zeitungen"
whose influence extends beyond their local area:
- Rheinischer
Merkur Intellectual weekly, Catholic orientation,
from Cologne
- TAZ
die tageszeitung Left wing/alternative daily,
headquartered in Berlin
- Tagesspiegel
and Berliner
Morgenpost are two middle-of-the-road Berlin daily
newspapers, with Tagesspiegel the more solid or middle class
of the two.
- Frankfurter Rundschau General German daily newspaper;
- Rheinische
Post From the Ruhr and lower Rhein comes
this general daily newspaper; what sets it off from many
other such German language newspapers is that it contains a
very extensive selection of German and international news
in English which is updated Tuesday and Friday evenings
at about 10 p.m. (MEZ) / 5p.m. (EST). The English version
includes articles from all the intervening days since the
last update.
- Süddeutsche
Zeitung Major establishment left-center
newspaper from Munich. This link brings you to a "beschleunigte
Seite" with a summary of the news. Click on "Druckausgabe"
on the right of that page for access to the main newspaper.
- Stern
Not exactly a weekly news magazine - perhaps a weekly
news magazine for a broader audience than a US news magazine
has. No exact US parallel, a combination of Time and People
and Entertainment Today.
- There are two major weekly
news magazines from Germany, Spiegel,
with an intellectual and negative bent which has an English language section and FOCUS, the more practical and money oriented of the two.
- Profil
is the weekly news magazine from Austria, while Facts
plays that role for Switzerland.
- Austria
Presse Agentur (APA) is not a newspaper or news magazine
but the Austrian press service, parallel to AP or UPI
in the United States. The news collection covers both
foreign and domestic stories.
- The Wiener-Zeitung
is neither a commercial nor an independent newspaper but the
official organ of the Austrian state; the original function
was somewhat similar to that of the US Federal Register
but the format and range has been expanded; at first glance
it's slick appearance leads one to believe it is a
"normal" newspaper. Particularly helpful for
finding current theater,
concerts, and other cultural events. There also is an English
language version.
- Handelsblatt
is the German financial and business newspaper, while
Wirtschaftsblatt and Trend
are the Austrian counterparts, both for economic and
business news; detailed stock and bond market coverage.
- Netzeitung.De
is not a newspaper or news magazine but an internet news
source. There is a personalized-pay section but anyone can
access the free sections.
