Todd General Store
The Todd General Store is located 10 miles south of West Jefferson and 11 miles north of Boone, off Hwy 194, overlooking the South Fork of the New River, and on Railroad Grade Road, one of the most scenic bike routes in North Carolina. The Todd General Store is listed in the National Register of Historic Places Call 336-877-1067 A community jam music session of Old Time Mountain music has been a welcome addition to the Store on Friday nights since summer of 2000. Every Friday night, six to twenty uncompensated musicians gather at the store to share their love of music, entertaining 40 to 50 country music lovers. The store literally vibrates with the sound of guitars, hammered dulcimers, fiddles, and other acoustical instruments. Every session is unique with new musicians joining in each week.

Country Cabin II Saturday is the night of choice for music in the hills, so after the first set at the Carter Fold, high-tail it over to the Country Cabin, (276) 679-2632, an hour away on Highway 23 in Norton. Its shows, with local and regional musicians and run by a nonprofit group called Appalachian Traditions, are actually in Country Cabin II. It's a bigger, newer version of the original wood cabin across the street, where locals started dancing to country bands in 1938, and where Dock Boggs, a coal miner who first recorded his white country blues in 1927, played and taught banjo after he was rediscovered in the folk music revival of the 1960's.

As a side road into the Uwharrie National Forest, the Birkhead Wilderness Route reveals the most rugged areas of North Carolina's piedmont. This mountainous area offers travelers a view of wilderness terrain combined with remnants of the past. Upon hiking the trails of the area, visitors will catch glimpses of the past in the old abandoned homesteads and mining areas. The Uwharrie National Forest covers 4,800 acres where visitors can see the oldest mountains on the continent. The byway travels through some of the most sparsely populated areas of the state and offers travelers a true escape from the bustle of urban life. Places to Visit American Classic Motorcycle Museum, NC There are six decades of the Harley Davidson American tradition included in this museum. The exhibits include a repair shop, diner, and gift store. http://www.byways.org/browse/byways/12812/
