Jersey City's Grove Street PATH Station was evacuated yesterday after a burning train rolled into the Downtown station about noon, Jersey City firefighters said.

"I was on the train and I heard two explosions at least a couple of cars away as we were pulling into the station," said Tyler Kandel, of Metuchen, whose trip to Manhattan was interrupted by the fire. "I didn't think the worst - the explosions weren't big enough."

What Kandel heard were blankets, entangled in the train's undercarriage, bursting into flames after coming in contact with the electrified third rail, Battalion Chief Joseph Giancaspro said.

As the train pulled into the station, Kandel said, he could see people on the platform already running for the stairs. When the doors opened, he and everyone else on the train got off and ran as well, he said.

Kandel and others waited above ground about an hour while firefighters worked in the station.

There were no injuries and trains began running through the drenched station by 1 p.m.
