Yonkers company to build 340 PATH cars

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has awarded a 499 (M) million dollar contract for new PATH subway cars to the Kawasaki Rail Car company in Yonkers. Governor George Pataki says the 340 new cars will eventually replace the entire PATH fleet. They should be going into service between 2008 and 2011. The new train cars will have improved lighting, heating and air conditioning, room under the seats for passengers' bags and three sets of doors on each side for fast entry and exit.

The contract will create as many as 300 jobs at the Yonkers plant, which now employs 280.

Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone said the contract is ``a wonderful opportunity for our city residents while increasing the number of people working in our ever-expanding downtown area.''
